Why Google isn’t a Good Replacement for a Professional Diagnosis

Articles

Living in the information age has its upsides and its downfalls, and there aren’t many forms of technology that contain this double-edged sword quite as strongly as the internet. We have the collective wealth of human knowledge at our fingertips, which has made everybody a bit of an expert on everything.

Where the medical fields are concerned, only those who have undergone rigorous training and achieved a doctorate can truly call themselves professionals in a medical practice. Still, that hasn’t stopped most of society going straight to doctor Google every time they need a convenient prognosis.

But is this really a good idea?

The Human Body is More Complicated than That

The human body, each and every one, comes with its own nuances, and when there are complications therein, they are generally not so simple as to lay out neatly in point form on some blog or another.

The internet tends to take a generic approach to medical advice; a one-size fits all solution that usually involves tea-tree and coconut oil, and is unable to give you a comprehensive diagnosis of your exact situation.

Bloggers are Rarely Experts

I trust a blogger’s opinion about where to get my coffee, which companies offer great services, I might even indulge in a life-hack here and there. But when Joe Blog starts to lay out their medical expertise, I can’t help but to question where they got their information from; because 9 times out of 10 it wasn’t from any medically sound sources.

Google Loves to Spell DOOM

Google, when we turn to it for medical advice, often shows us its most paranoid side. If you have a headache, some blogger out there will convince you that you have some rare, exotic and terminal disease. This will only add to your stress, and its stress that you can likely do without. It could be that your nose-bleed is simply from dry air, or that headache is just from a little eye-strain.

Try not to use Google to frighten yourself back into good health when a real diagnosis will set you on the right path to recovery.
